Artist in Residence

Hakeem Abdellah

Growing up drawing comic books and eventually, anime characters, Hakeem began working with vivid colors and shapes while writing graffiti in college; this style gave way to creating textile and geometric shape-inspired patterns he uses today.

Hakeem’s goal when creating art is to encourage the viewer to acknowledge the beauty in its simplicity, and to the concept of ‘less is more.’ While inspiration often comes from anywhere, women’s luxury fashion, classical architecture and interior design, and the aesthetics of sports such as GT racing, soccer, and tennis are among his most significant inspirations. In a deeper sense, he is driven by the process and challenge of bringing ideas to fruition. Unless noted otherwise, Hakeem’s artwork is primarily done with acrylic ink, spray paint, and paint markers on paper or canvas.
